Q : On the previous season of Seoul Fashion Week Kang Dong Joon’s collection, instead of Designer Kang, your proposal has become a hot topic. Whose idea was that?
A : The rose flowers proposal was hyung’s (designer Kang Dong Joon) idea. I’ve also met (Kang) Dong Joon hyung several times with his wife (or girlfriend) in private. He asked me to suggest him how he should do the proposal as he wants to propose her. So, I suggested I will give her the flowers and make it looks like I am the one who’s proposing. People would be really curious with that. He agreed, so we came early to the rehearsal and practiced.
Q : Designer Kang Dong Joon must be trusting your planning skill. We, too, chose you and Kim Won Joong as model who have great directing (or planning) skill on our previous interview.
A : I’ve always like that kind of stuff (directing/planning). My physical condition isn’t that good compared to other model. So, I want to show something different. For example, Dongjoon hyung has a collection with mafia concept. I asked them to give me cigar and some other props to look different.
Q : Kim Woo Bin vs. Kim Won Joong. Whose directing skill is better?
A : Kim Won Joong is really good. Wonjoong hyung’s expression is alive. So I think, he is better than me. He is by far better than me. You will know if you watch the show, but his expression is really different.
Q : Style between each designers are different. Isn’t it hard to perform on the stage that suit with the style?
A : The clothes itself are very pretty so it feels different by just wearing it. It feels more different after the hair and make-up are done. Actually, these can still be seen even it’s just a walk. I know how they feel since I’ve been doing fashion show with designers that I closed to. So, it’s more comfortable to express their style.
■ Kim Woo Bin as a model
Q : Your runway at the open Seoul Fashion Week on March was not that much compared to your early days. Didn’t you feel regretted?
A : It was a show with four designer, Kim Seo Ryong, Jeong Doo Yeong, Kang Dong Joon and Song Hye Myeong. I used to do 7~8 runway a day on my early days. So I thought, it won’t be tiring if I do another one runway but it’s tiring. I want to do more in the future but I don’t know since it’s depends on the situation. This time I’m preparing for the movie so I don’t think I’ll do runway since it’s overlapping with my schedule.
Q : Personally, do you have preferred style?
A : I like Designer Kim Seo Ryong’s outfits the best. I always wear his outfits when I have schedule. It’s too bad I can’t wear some of the outfits since I have a large frame. However, I try to wear the outfits I wore for fashion show (for schedule?)
Q : Who provided the outfits on a fashion show?
A : The sponsorship, of course. The outfits are borrowed from the sponsor. But I think they will give you the outfits if you asked for it (laughs)
Q : Wouldn’t Designer Kang Dong Joon be sad if he heard about this (about he likes Designer Kim’s outfits)
A : I always wear Dongjoon hyung’s outfits! I always wear it when I’m doing drama. And of course, I still wear it these days. I can’t wear Hyemyeong nuna’s outfits that often because it’s too much. For this upcoming movie, Designer Jeong Doo Yeop will sponsor his outfits.
Q : Your name are getting the attention as an actor and your popularity are increasing. How do you feel to be on the runway again?
A : It was very fun (runway). It’s something I’ve always want to do and it’s familiar with me. It became more fun because there are many people that I’m closed with. It feels like coming home after leaving for vacation. I talked a lot too. At that time, I was doing a tv program. When I watched the broadcast, I looked so excited. That’s how happy I am to do runway again. It’s nice to meet the model once in every 6 months. There are some whom I can’t meet since they are in army.

■ The first step as a model
Q : Not long ago, your confession about difficulties before debut in a broadcast has been a hot topic.
A : It’s true about my difficulties before debut. The agency was in difficulties too. To be honest, I don’t want to talk about that at the broadcast. I want to talk about it later, with cool. I didn’t tell the writers about it at the meeting before the shoot. But on the set, the seniors were talking about their difficulties and I don’t have that much difficulties. So I talked about this because of the mood on the set.
Q : After the broadcast, your model friend, Jang Migwan, whom you spend the time (before debut) together has been the most searched keyword.
A : He said it was very hard for him after the broadcast aired. Because many people suddenly gained interest in him… He turned off his phone because many had calling him. Truthfully, thanks to him I was able to escape from the hard time. We rely on each other a lot back then.
Q : So Jang Migwan is your best friend among the model?
A : I have 6~7 best friends among the model. They are (Jang) Migwan, Hyuksoo hyung (Lee Soohyuk), (Kim) Yeonggwang hyung, (Hong) Jonghyeon hyung and others. [he didn’t mention jongsuk oh i’m hurt]
Q : What activity you do after your debut?
A : I think I’ve been on stage for almost all collection for menswear. There were 7~8 stage for Seoul Fashion Week a day. I think I do a lot of decent shows. I have been doing Seoul Fashion Week since it was first started on 2008, when I was 20 years old. I keep doing it without missing a season. After I started working for broadcast, I can’t do modelling that much. This job is fun and it is a stimulus for me so I want to keep doing fashion show.
■ Model… The story behind it
Q : What job will the model do if they don’t have fashion show?
A : Some model will have photo shoot but there are model who have nothing to do. Most of them will do part time job. If their house are in Seoul and the condition at their house is fine, they will go shopping. But most of them will do part time job. Especially those who came from the province. Because we have to make earning. Even if we do a lot of work during Fashion Week, it won’t be enough. The fashion industry’s pay is very small. Plus, there are many model these days and there are friends who had been conned and didn’t receive the pay after a show. They were suffering.
Q : We are curious about the process to be a runway model.
A : In my case, I saw an audition of a collection when I first started. It was at Dongdaemun. If you go to the audition, you will have to sit in front of the designer. They will watch your walking… If they think you’re okay, they will call you after a meeting. You will have to wear the clothes and if it fit, you will have to do the rehearsal and walking later. Then, you will be on the stage if there’s no problem. It will get easier after you’ve done one or two show with the designer and know how this (runway model) work.
I always go to the audition before. Since I started doing tv programs, I couldn’t go. I keep doing the show for my close designer and because it’s fun. But some designer only use model who had always do their show, so they (the model) don’t have to go through the audition.
Q : Everyone is exploding charisma on the runway. How is it on the backstage?
A : It’s crazy. We’ll wear the clothes when it’s time. The designer will be busy preparing the clothes on the model who will come out first. Those clothes were made a few months before with struggle. When it didn’t fit with us, we would be really sorry. But we have to go on stage too. So I think it’s best to try the clothes first when there’s time before doing anything else.
Actually, every fashion show are different. If the show have many model, we’ll be more relaxed. So, I will wear the clothes and chat. I will come out after they called “Kim Woobin, please come out”

A: I’m not sure. I think I’ve been self-conscious since I was a kid. I apply hair gel even if I’m just going to grocery store. So, I think it’s true that I’m interested in people’s attention.
Q: You are tall since you were a kid. Didn’t you hear people told you to be a model?
A: No. I was very thin back then. Thou I’m thin too now… Before I gain weight and start exercising, I was 59kg in 11th grade (18 years old). My height back then was the same with my height right now. I have nothing but bones. I prepared for entrance examination for model lesson and gradually exercising when the examination is about to come. I ate eggs, potatoes, sweet potatoes and supplements every day. I strictly follow my diet about 3 months. So I was able to gain 12kg.
Q: You must be very determined with your dream.
A: Yes. I’m very determined. I never hesitated about it. I’m determined before my debut but after I have debuted, I’m become more determined. Because being a model is so fun.
Q: 부모님께서는 평범한 사람이 되길 원하지 않았을까요.
A: “아무래도 그러셨겠죠. 그래서 지금 생각해봐도 부모님이 정말 깨어있으신 분 같고, 대단하신 것 같아요. 제가 장남이다 보니까 제게 거는 기대가 있으셨을 텐데도 불안한 직종에 있는 저를 믿어주셨죠. 제 일을 좋아해주시고 늘 응원 많이 해주세요.”
Q: You are cute in broadcast programs but very charismatic on runway. How are you usually?
A: I’m a human too so I have various side. I’m shy with strangers. I will make jokes and aegyo if we are close. I have always playing strong characters for dramas. It’s just an act so I thought the viewers wouldn’t think that it’s really my personality. But every time in interview they said they really thought I was like that.
